Compassion in the Age of Covid

This list of action items was first printed along with article titled Compassion in the Age of Covid in ROC Issue 01, pages 44-57. To submit resources relating to this topic, please send us an email.

The best way to get through a crisis is together. An act of kindness can not only help someone else, but it can also give us a sense of purpose when we feel uncertain. It’s easy to feel like our actions don’t matter but by extending a hand (at a distance) to our fellow humans, we can get through this together. Moreover, we can make compassion, generosity and mutual care the “new normal”.

Ways to help when time and resources are limited.

SHOP at small businesses. Almost 100,000 businesses have shut down permanently, in the US alone, since the start of the pandemic.

Tools for contributing when you have more time or resources

DONATE to or volunteer with a mutual aid project that supports people in your community.

Options for ongoing and sustainable engagement.

START a GoFundMe or similar fundraiser to support students and teachers.

VOLUNTEER with Women’s START a mutual aid effort, if your community doesn’t have one, to help share food, clothing, school supplies or money with community members in need.

How to HELP essential workers:

  • Follow your local COVID-19 guidelines.
  • Stopping the spread is the best thing we can do!
  • Offer to cook meals for stressed out essential workers.
  • Volunteer to run errands or provide daycare services for essential workers.
  • Donate lunch or coffee to frontline workers.
  • Share messages of thanks to doctors and nurses in your community on social media.
